Luciano Pompilio classical musician

Luciano Pompilio is an Italian classical guitarist recognized internationally both as a soloist and as a chamber musician.

He graduated in Classical Guitar with highest honors in 1990 from the “U. Giordano” Conservatory of Music in Foggia. His artistic training continued at the Arts Academy in Rome, where he completed the Three-year International Concert Formation Course with highest honors under the guidance of M° Stefano Palamidessi. In parallel, he pursued musicological studies at the University of Bologna, earning a D.A.M.S. degree with a thesis on Benjamin Britten’s Nocturnal in Music Semiology. He refined his artistry through masterclasses with leading figures such as David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Alberto Ponce, Hopkinson Smith, and the Assad brothers.

In 1994 he founded the Duo Caputo Pompilio, quickly gaining the attention of critics and audiences worldwide. The duo has won 25 international competitions with 15 first absolute prizes. Among these, they were the first Italians ever to win the prestigious International Guitar Duo Competition of Montélimar, France, considered the world’s most important contest for guitar duo. In 2018, the National Congress of Paraguay awarded him the “Premio Repubblica,” one of Latin America’s highest civil honors, in recognition of his work as a performer and ambassador of Agustín Barrios Mangoré’s music.

Pompilio has performed extensively across Europe, America and Asia, appearing for major musical institutions in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, the United States, Mexico, Russia, Korea, Argentina and beyond. His orchestral collaborations include the first Italian performance and second world performance of Leo Brouwer’s The Book of Signs for two guitars and orchestra in 2007. He regularly performs with ensembles such as the Prima Vista Quartet of Warsaw and the Rimsky Korsakov Quartet of St. Petersburg.

His discography includes nine CDs as soloist and in duo. The solo album Tribute reached the Top 200 iTunes Releases, ranking 30th in Canada and Germany. Other notable recordings include Just Strings, a live album of major works for guitar and string quartet, and J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations BWV 988 transcribed for two guitars.

He has recorded for Italian National Television RAI 3, RadioTre, Radio Vaticana, France Musiques, and has been a guest on Tele Padre Pio’s worldwide broadcast “La Bibbia Giorno e Notte,” both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles.
He currently teaches classical guitar at a state school and regularly gives masterclasses in Italy, Korea, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Paraguay, USA, and Argentina, Denmark. He is also Artistic Director of the International Guitar Festival “Città di Manfredonia” and of the “In Concerto” International Concert Season in San Giovanni Rotondo.

Si diploma in chitarra classica nel 1990 presso il Conservatorio “U. Giordano” di Foggia, con il massimo dei voti. Parallelamente studia musicologia presso l’Università di Lettere e Filosofia di Bologna conseguendo la Laurea D.A.M.S. con l’analisi del Nocturnal di Britten in Semiologia della Musica. Dopo importanti esperienze solistiche e con varie formazioni, si è unito in duo con Giuseppe Caputo imponendosi all’attenzione della sta

 

mpa e degli addetti ai lavori vincendo in questa formazione 25 concorsi con 15 primi premi assoluti, tra i quali spicca il concorso di Montelimar (Francia), il concorso più importante al mondo per duo di chitarra. Contemporaneamente ha seguito il Corso Internazionale di Formazione Concertistica presso l’Arts Academy di Roma sia come solista (triennale) sia come duo (Biennale), laureandosi con il massimo dei voti. Ha inciso 8 CDs. L’ultimo cd “Tribute” è nella Top 200 Release di Itunes al 30° posto in Canada e Germania. Ha suonato per importanti istituzioni musicali in tutta Europa, Asia e America. Nella sua recente visita in Paraguay, luglio 2018, ha ricevuto dal Congreso Nacional del Paraguay, Direcìon de Cultura, il “Premio Repubblica”, uno dei più prestigiosi riconoscimenti civili dell’America Latina come cultore e diffusore delle opere di Augustin Barrios Mangorè nel mondo ed è stato considerato tra i migliori interpreti della musica del leggendario compositore. E’ direttore artistico del Festival Internazionale di chitarra “Città di Manfredonia” e della Stagione Concertistica Internazionale “In Concerto” a San Giovanni Rotondo.
